OpenAI-compatible API
Updated 1 Nov 2026
What does compatible mean?
An OpenAI-compatible API accepts requests in a format that applications built around the OpenAI API can recognise. For a chat application, this commonly means a model identifier, a list of messages and settings controlling the generated response. Compatibility lets a team reuse familiar client libraries instead of writing a separate network client for each model service.
The practical benefit is a smaller integration change. A server can point its client at a different base URL and supply the relevant API key. The application still needs to choose a supported model identifier. That identifier belongs to the serving platform, so a name copied from a model repository is not automatically a valid API alias.
Which features should I check?
Compatibility is specific to endpoints and features. Basic chat support does not establish support for image inputs, streaming, structured responses or tool calling. Those features depend on both the underlying model and the implementation serving it. A successful text request is a useful first test, but it cannot validate the entire application.
Start with a representative prompt and inspect the response object. Then test the features your product actually uses: message history, streaming chunks, tool requests and image inputs where relevant. Check how errors arrive and how your application handles an interrupted request. Keep these checks close to your integration code so a future model change is easier to assess.
How should I integrate it?
Keep credentials in a server environment rather than shipping them to a browser. Make the base URL and model configurable, and avoid mixing provider-specific settings into unrelated application code. Log enough request metadata to investigate failures without unnecessarily copying user content into additional systems.
IndicStack follows the OpenAI chat completions format at https://api.indicstack.ai/v1. Its quickstart includes Python, Node.js and curl examples for the live Qwen3.8 27B model. Treat those examples as the starting point for testing your own prompts and error handling. Format compatibility reduces integration work; output quality still needs evaluation against the job your application must do.
